The clutch provides adhesion of the pulley and the compressor shaft by means of an electromagnet, which, when switched on, attracts the front plate to the pulley. The front plate is rigidly fixed to the compressor shaft using a spline or key connection. Thus, when the clutch is switched on, the torque is transmitted from the belt to the pulley, from the pulley to the front plate, from the front plate to the compressor shaft itself. When the system is not switched on, the pressure plate is demagnetized and the pulley rotates "idle" without transmitting any torque to the shaft. The most common malfunction of the electromagnetic clutch is the failure of the electromagnetic coil. This is often due to overheating of the electromagnetic coil.
